MSU-Meridian celebrates National Social Work Month
(MERIDIAN) - The National Association of Social Workers (NASW), the nation's largest group of social workers, celebrates the month of March as National Social Work Month with a theme All People Matter.
MSU-Meridian celebrated the month during a special program, Tuesday, March 25 in Kahlmus Auditorium.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, social work continues to be a fast-growing occupation in the United States. More than 600,000 social work college graduates hold social work positions, and an additional 130,000 people are employed as community and social service managers. Overall employment of social workers is projected to grow 19 percent from 2012-2022.
Each spring, approximately 25 students graduate from MSU-Meridian with a degree in Social Work. At present the degree program is the largest in the division of Arts and Sciences with 61 students. The Social Work program was recently re-accredited in February by the Council on Social Work Education until the year 2021.
During the special program ten Advisory Board members were recognized along with 24 field instructors. Eight social work students were also inducted into the Phi Alpha National Honor Society (Iota Psi Chapter). Students inducted into the honor society must have a 3.5 GPA in the Social Work program and 3.0 GPA overall.
