A student desiring to enroll in the Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies degree program must solicit the sponsorship of a faculty member in each area of concentration. These disciplines must be in at least two different divisions on the Meridian campus. Together the student and faculty sponsors should formulate the individualized course of study. To ensure coherence in the BSIS program, the student must submit a letter to the BSIS Committee with the rationale for the course of study and explanation of the program's direct relationship to the student's personal and career goals. If approved, the student may proceed with the program of study. The BSIS committee will meet during the fall and spring semesters and may additionally require the student to submit oral arguments and answer questions. Students must make written application prior to the scheduled meeting. If approved the student must complete a change of major form and, if applicable, an application for graduation. These forms may be obtained from the MSU-Meridian Division of Arts and Sciences.
The Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies (BSIS) is intended to allow students maximum flexibility to custom-design a program of study to meet their personal and career goals. This multidisciplinary academic program is appropriate for students motivated by specific interests not recognized in traditional majors. The individual program of study must assure both depth and breadth of study. Therefore, such a program must insure that students take at least 36 upper-division hours in the areas (concentrations) they have chosen for emphasis. Students may choose 2 concentration areas with a minimum of 18 hours in each concentration or 3 concentration areas with a minimum of 12 hours in each. Concentration areas must be taken from at least two different academic divisions. The University core curriculum requirement must be met in addition to a general studies core requirement. All University Requirements, including 32 hours of upper division course work and a year's residence, must be met for graduation. A student must maintain an overall 2.0 GPA with no more than one grade of "D" in each concentration area.
